Abstract

Under the scope of Discourse Analysis, this article analyses the construction of an authority presidential ethos(Amossy, 2010; Maingueneau, 1999) of the President of the Republic in 6 presidential inaugural addresses given during the Estado Novo. This study uses a qualitative approach to focus on the deontic modality (linguistic categories, obligation source, target and object) and its analysis falls into two headings: a) the President’s duties and b) the People’s duties. We have concluded that distinct and multiple images of authority (that serve Estado Novo’s political and ideological agenda) are built of and/or by the President.
