The use of the communicative approach in the Oriente.pt textbook

This article describes the creation of a beginner-level Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) textbook – Oriente.pt – specifically developed for Chinese students, both adults and young adults. This teaching resource is based on dynamic and adaptable teaching methodologies, incorporating fundamental principles from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards. It also highlights the use of translation as a pedagogical tool and the need to adapt communicative teaching to the linguistic and cultural specificities of Chinese learners, given the importance of language teaching that meets students’ needs.
